If you are reading this, I presume, you already are familiar with the virtualization concept. Also, looking for the reason to choose one between both. So, rather beating around basic terms, let us get started.
For
the readers who are new and have zero knowledge about the topic. Allow me to
shed some light in a layman's language and others can just skip the following
paragraph.
Virtualization
The
foundation of making one computer act and perform like many others was laid
with the term 'Virtualization'. For it to succeed we need "Hypervisors". Hypervisors are the
software that copies attributes of a physical computer and creates virtual
copies of the host computer. This saves a lot of money on hardwares and
resolves losing-data issues. HyperV and VMware are two of the leading
hypervisors in the market.
HYPER-V
V/S VMware
The
installers of both the softwares are quite similar. Each of them comes in a
free Basic version but with limitations. For the major crowd, HyperV is a
"safer" option for someone who does not have a lot of experience and
is looking forward to some basic features. But, this support shifts to VMware
when advanced versions or can say "paid ones" come to play.
Here
are some grounds for comparison.
Application
Limitations
VMware
workstation pro is way more user-friendly than HyperV manager. VMware supports
a wide range of Operating systems like Windows, Linux, VMware ESX and many
others whereas HyperV enhanced session is only available for Windows 8.1 and
Windows 10. However, HyperV has been developed by Microsoft but it doesn't
support all Windows.
Quality
& Features
HyperV
VM connection is basically just a remote desktop into the virtual machine. The
animations you would see on Windows 8 have been replaced by pop-ups. The screen
resolution does not go up to 1080p. With VMware you can use all the advanced
features for all OS. It also offers modern backup tools like Veeam.
Scaling
Capabilities
There
are some associated drawbacks with HyperV as it runs on top of Windows. The
clustering and storage technology of Windows is complex and bulky and this
eventually affects the running speed of HyperV if you switch to advanced
features. HyperV demands frequent maintenance as compared to VMware. VMware web
interface is intuitive with easy to follow setup guides.
Cost
Last
but not the least is the costing of software. This is a crunch point for HyperV
as features of VMware free version are all locked behind license keys and the
advanced version is expensive. So, lots of small and medium businesses are
jumping on the bandwagon.
This
was all the basic demarcation between the two leading hypervisors of the
market. So, have you chosen one for yourself?
