Free SSL VS Paid SSL

 SSL (Secure Socket Layer): -

Secure socket layer is used for establishing authenticated connection between URLs. Although SSL protocol was deprecated with its initial release of 1.0 in 1999. It is still very common to refer to such technology. The most recent version is TLS 1.3 define in RFC 8446. SSL is widely used and deployed cryptographic protocol in websites. SSL provides secure channel between web browser and web server while operating over the internal network. One common example SSL is used to secure communication. It turns your website from HTTP (hypertext transport protocol) to HTTPS (hypertext transport protocol secure).

SSL global technology that encrypts communication. It allows private conversation between two intended parties. For creating secure connection, SSL certificate is installed in web server using web hosting control panel. SSL authenticates identify of website and it also encrypts data that is being transmitted.

Free SSL (secure socket layer): -

Every small website owner try to find free website resources. Free SSL fit into two categories “Self signed certificates”. This type of certificate don’t need to register to any (CA) certificate authority. They are signed by issuer. And the second type of free SSL certificate available which is signed by certificate authority.

Paid SSL (secure socket layer): -

Paid SSL is good option but it is paid. You have to pay for it. A paid certificate is issued by trustworthy (CA) certificate authority. You can either get it from certificate authority or you can purchase it from 3rd party resellers.

Free SSL VS Paid SSL: -

  • Type of SSL Certificate – Free SSL comes with DV (domain validation) option. Domain validation are used to provide basic level of authentication. Usually, this type of SSL is used in small websites and blogs. Free SSL certificates doesn’t validate through OV (organization validation) and EV (extended validation) certificates. Paid SSL comes with OV and EV option which is the necessity for protecting your business online.
  • Level of Validation – Before issuing a free certificate, website owner’s business details need to be verify. CA only validates the identity of website owner. But in paid SSL certificate verification. Before issuing the certificate, identification of website owner is must. In case of OV and EV certificates in depth verification is done thoroughly by CA (certificate authority).
  • Validity Period – Free are issued by some of the popular CA (certificate authority) from 30-90 days. Because of limited validity business owners have to renew certificates every 30-90 days. But if business organizations has purchase SSL. The validity is for 1-2 years.
  • Support – CA (certificate authority) and resellers are committed in providing support to their customers. CA’s get each and every type of help from their customer. Either its chat or call and email. But free CAs don’t give any type of support to their customers. You have to resolve issues by searching through the forums.
  • Warranty – Free SSL has no warranty. If anything goes wrong with CA’s end. CA’s are not responsible because they are not providing you any assistance and some CA’s don’t even maintain free SSL. But Paid SSL certificates provides full warranty.
