What is a cPanel?
One often comes across the term cPanel with regard to web
hosting. To explain in the simplest way, a cPanel is nothing more than a web
hosting control panel, which means it is a software that is meant to manage a web hosting server. A cPanel is an easy to use as well as intuitive Linux-based
control panel. It is renowned as one of the most popular web hosting control panels
that has been developed by the American corporation knows as cPanel, L.L.C. It enables
a user to manage all his web hosting related services at one place and ensures
a convenient and efficient management of his web hosting account. It aids in
the creation of new FTP users as well as email addresses and subdomains,
installs software, monitors resources. These are a few of the many services
that a cPanel performs.
It provides automation tools that render the process of website hosting simple along with a graphical interface (GUI). A cPanel is not only easy to learn and use but also saves valuable time and money of its user. This tried and tested control panel comes along with software auto-installers. Moreover, it offers a huge quantity of tutorials and provides online support for the user’s convenience.
cPanel forms a part of a software suite that is known as
cPanel & WHM. It provides control capability to resellers, administrators
and website owners with regard to the different aspects of server and website
administration. This is achieved through a standard web browser with the aid of
a three-tier structure. A cPanel is meant to manage a single hosting account,
whereas cPanel & WHM enables a user to manage the entire server.
What is web hosting?
It becomes imperative to shed some light upon the concept of web
hosting when providing information on the tool that manages a web hosting
server (a cPanel). Web hosting refers to all those paid services (leasing
server space, technology and services) that are needed to store and deliver the
files that make a website, so that the website can be accessible over the
Internet. It is the server that stores every element of a website (files,
images, text and videos) and makes these elements accessible through the web
host. Web hosting can be of different
types, such as shared, dedicated, reseller, cloud, WordPress and VPS. Those web
hosts that have earned the reputation of being the “Top
Cloud Hosting Company” or the “Best Windows Hosting
Company” or the “Top Web
Hosting Company” provide reliable services consistently to ensure
customer satisfaction in the field of web hosting.
What is a demo cPanel account?
In the context of web hosting, a reseller can create a demo
cPanel. This lets his potential clients have access to the account in order to
experience the look and feel of it. A demo account appears to be totally functional
but it restricts a user from making any changes to files and folders that would
alter those. In this way the users of such accounts, who are potential clients
as well, can navigate the features of cPanel & WHM without having the
ability to change any of the files or settings.
What is WHM?
WHM has been referred to a few times, in the information
provided here. It is the abbreviation for WebHost Manager and is a web-based
tool. It is used for server administration. WHM is available in two tiers. One
of these is known as the “root WHM” and the other as “non-root WHM” or Reseller
WHM. It is the server administrators that use the root WHM. Non-root WHM is
used by others, such as resellers, in order to ensure the management of hosting
accounts, which are often referred to as cPanel accounts. When WHM is
accessible to users that have reseller privileges, reseller users of such a
cPanel get less features than those that are available to the root user. This
limitation is generally imposed by the server administration. The server administrator
is able to conduct maintenance operations from root WHM.
Additionally, WHM serves the purpose of managing SSL
certificates, hosting packages, cPanel users, DNS zones, authentication methods
as well as themes. It also manages FTP, SSH services on the server and mail
(IMAP, POP and SMTP).
cPanel & WHM
cPanel
& WHM have been designed to work either as a VPS (Virtual Private Server)
or a dedicated server. It is not easy to
remove cPanel & WHM once the installation has happened. In order to
uninstall these, the server needs to be reformatted.
Apache,
PHP, MySQL, Perl, PostgreSQL and BIND (DNS) are included in application-based
support. IMAP, POP3 and SMTP services are included in email-based support.
cPanel is made accessible via HTTPS on port 2083. HTTPS on port 2087 is used to
access WHM. A freshly installed operating system that has been configured the
least number of times previously, is an ideal option on which cPanel & WHM
should be installed.
